What It Really Takes to Show Up: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Pet Care

By Kaitlyn Argiro

Owning a dog walking and pet sitting company is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It’s also one of the most demanding. What we do is deeply time-sensitive. Pets need to be fed, walked, medicated, and cared for on a schedule that doesn’t shift. There are no “we’ll get to it tomorrow” moments in this work. We can’t be late. We can’t reschedule because someone isn’t feeling well. And there are no true days off, because the responsibility never pauses.

But that’s also what makes this work so meaningful. Our clients trust us to show up when it matters most. And we do. What I’ve learned over the years, though, is that showing up consistently at this level is not something anyone can or should do alone.

It Takes a Village

I feel incredibly grateful that I don’t have to carry this responsibility by myself. It truly takes a village to coordinate the level of care we provide every single day.

Our Operations Coordinators are at the heart of that effort. They are the ones behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly. They manage complex schedules, match the right sitter with the right family, and thoughtfully route each day so our team can move efficiently and effectively.

Their work is constant. It’s detailed. It requires problem-solving, foresight, and care. And it’s one of the biggest reasons we’re able to deliver the level of service we promise.

Evolving the Way We Care

When I first started this business, my vision was simple. I wanted one sitter to care for one family. It felt personal, consistent, and aligned with the level of care I envisioned. But over time, I realized that model wasn’t sustainable. No one person can be available 24/7 for a single family. And trying to force that model didn’t serve our team or our clients in the long run.

Making the decision to evolve was not easy. It meant letting go of something I originally believed was the “right” way to do things. But it turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made.

Now, families often have more than one sitter supporting them. And instead of losing quality, we gained something even better. There are built-in checks and balances. There’s another set of eyes ensuring that everything is done to our standards. That the food area is clean. That the home is cared for. That the pets are happy, safe, and thriving.

It also allows our team to show up as their best selves. Because the reality is, no one can do their best work when they’re sick, overwhelmed, or dealing with life outside of work. A team-based approach gives us the flexibility and support needed to maintain excellence without burning out.

The Backbone of Our Team

I also want to recognize our Team Leads.

These women are the backbone of our company. They train new team members, provide guidance, and support our sitters in real time. They lead with empathy, share their experience, and empower others to grow.

They are also the bridge between the field and the office. They understand both sides, which allows them to support the team in a way that is both practical and compassionate.

And their role doesn’t stop when the office closes. On weekends and during off-hours, they are still there. Answering calls. Troubleshooting issues. Supporting team members in the field. Making sure that no one is ever handling a challenge alone. They carry a lot. And they do it with care, consistency, and professionalism.

Built on Trust, Powered by People

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that this business is not built on services alone. It’s built on people. It’s built on the trust our clients place in us. And it’s built on the incredible team that shows up every single day to honor that trust.

I feel incredibly lucky to work alongside people who care as deeply as they do. People who are willing to step up for each other, support one another, and hold themselves to a high standard of care.

This work isn’t always easy. But with the right team, it becomes something really special. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
