Exploring the Season Safely

ree

As fall settles over Leesburg, the air turns crisp, leaves scatter across the ground, and every walk feels a little more scenic. For many pets, this season means new smells to discover and plenty of excitement on every outing.

But those same fall sights and scents can sometimes hide hazards that curious noses might find tempting. Keeping your pet safe doesn’t mean keeping them from having fun. It’s all about knowing what to watch for and taking a few simple precautions.

Seasonal Risks to Watch For

Acorns and Leaves

They may look harmless, but acorns and leaves, especially oak leaves, contain tannins that can upset your pet’s stomach.

Wild Mushrooms

Mushrooms pop up quickly after rain, and while most are harmless, a few are highly toxic. It’s nearly impossible to tell them apart without expert knowledge. Keep your dog close on walks and redirect them if they start to sniff or nibble.

Damp Leaves and Puddles

Piles of wet leaves can grow mold or harbor bacteria, and stagnant puddles can contain harmful organisms. Pets that lick or chew in these areas risk gastrointestinal irritation or infection.

Know the Warning Signs

If your pet ingests something they shouldn’t, it’s important to recognize symptoms early. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weakness, tremors, or lack of coordination

  • Unusual lethargy or confusion

  • Seizures or difficulty breathing (in severe cases)

Quick action can make all the difference. If possible, bring a sample of what your pet may have eaten. It can help your vet determine the best treatment.

Simple Safety Habits for Fall Walks

  • Keep walks supervised and on-leash. This prevents wandering into areas with mushrooms, fallen fruit, or unknown plants.

  • Wipe paws after each outing. It helps remove debris, pollen, or mold your pet may have stepped in, especially useful for pets with allergies.

  • Provide clean drinking water. Carry a travel bowl or stop by a pet-safe fountain instead of letting pets drink from puddles.

  • Check your yard regularly. Rake up fallen leaves and keep an eye out for mushrooms or acorns before your pet heads outside.

Keeping Pets Cozy Indoors

As we spend more time inside, make sure your pet’s environment stays warm, enriching, and comfortable. Rotate their toys to keep things interesting, ensure they always have fresh water, and set up a soft spot where they can relax and watch the world outside.

If your schedule gets busier this season, one of our Drop-In Visits is a great way to give your pet companionship and care while you’re away. It’s perfect for mid-day potty breaks, playtime, or a little extra love on a chilly afternoon.
